Can you really Freestyle?

Freestyle rap
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Freestyle rap is an improvisational form of rapping, performed with few or no previously composed lyrics, which is said to reflect a direct mapping of the mental state and performing situation of the artist. It is non-scripted, non-rehearsed, uncut, and the rawest form of hip-hop. Artists will often refer to places and objects in their immediate setting. Freestyle rapping forces an individual to think on the spot, describe their surroundings, and, to a certain degree, rap uncensored from what is inside. It is similar in this sense to improvisational music or acting and draws comparisons to improvisational jazz in particular.

I think freestyle rap is sometimes taken for granted... People should understand what freestyling actually is (see above) ..and you will notice that most rappers dont actually freestyle when asked to. All the youtube videos i labeled"freestyle", are ACTUAL freestyles...

It takes skill to come up with ideas quickly that make sense together... It's nothin to remember a few written lyrics then recite them to a beat and call it a "freestyle"... that's weak...

Usually you can tell if the emcee is actually freestyling by the way they deliver and the content of the rhymes... In real freestyles you will usually have short pauses or mess-ups and the content will usually be many different topics....

"Call it a Lyrical Brainstorm" or "Blogging to a beat"

In my opinion, real artists should be able to freestyle... (ex. Charles Hamilton, Tone, Grenade, Q-tip, Akil Dasan, Scriyl ect.).. thats just a few i can think of right off the top... I'm sure theres way more... BUT

Props goes to all the emcees that can freestyle... Ya'll deserve more recognition. PEACE.*DeadOn*

I agree that freestyling is valuable but its just like Eminem said, when most people ask someone to spit they dont wanna hear fuck ups. They wanna hear perfection. I think of freestylin in the same way as a conversation. When Obama gives a speech, just like most songs, that shit is written. Its concise and to the point whereas a freestyle is a drunk man rambling. While he may speak some truth, hes mostly saying alotta bullshit. Also, the definition of freestyle varies depending on where you go or who you ask. Alot of the old school heads (KRS, Kool Moe Dee, etc.) think a freestyle is nothing more than a verse no one has heard. New york battlers often intermix prewritten lines with improv and so on and so on. The point is.... Spit some hot shit! Thats all that matters.
